Garbage Removal

Brookfield, Wisconsin, has a progressive garbage removal policy aimed at promoting sustainability and maintaining a clean environment. The city provides weekly curbside garbage collection services to all households, ensuring that waste is managed efficiently. Residents are encouraged to separate recyclables (see below) from general waste, contributing to the town’s recycling initiatives and reducing landfill usage.
Collection in Pheasant Run is fulfilled on Thursday except on some holidays when it is delayed one day until Friday. Those holidays are:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
When a holiday falls on a Friday, we are unaffected. You can always consult our Calendar page or the list on our Home page in order to check whether a particular holiday affects us and how.
Please have all garbage and recyclables outside by 7 a.m.
The City of Brookfield requires that trash must be placed in watertight containers, such as plastic bags, or covered. Property owners shall provide up to a maximum of five of their own garbage cans – no larger than 33 gallons. When using a garbage can, trash must still be contained in a garbage bag. No “loose” trash will be collected.
The weight of the bags/containers must not exceed 50 lbs. each. Containers in a deteriorated or unsanitary condition must be maintained and/or replaced by the resident.
Trash may be placed anywhere on the driveway from just outside the garage to the edge of the street. Trash will not be picked up from inside the garage.
The current contractor for picking up our garbage and recycling is Green for Life (GFL) . You can contact them at: 262- 367-6040.
The collection service may be interrupted by severe weather. In the event that trash collection is not possible, service will resume as soon as possible. This website and/or our email system will try to inform you of such eventualities, but that may not always be possible when decisions concerning service interruptions are made at the last minute. If necessary, call GFL for rescheduled collection days.
Recycling

Brookfield follows a curbside recycling program for residents to dispose of recyclable materials. The city partners with GFL to provide recycling bins for single-stream recycling, meaning all accepted materials can be mixed together. Items such as paper, cardboard, glass, plastic containers labeled #1-#7, and aluminum cans are accepted. These materials should be clean and free of food residue to ensure they can be processed.
The city emphasizes not placing non-recyclable items in the bins, such as plastic bags, Styrofoam, or hazardous waste, as they can contaminate the recycling stream. Yard waste, electronics, and bulky items are handled through separate collection events or drop-off services. Brookfield encourages residents to stay informed on what can and cannot be recycled through city-provided guidelines to promote responsible recycling and minimize waste going to landfills. This system helps reduce the environmental impact and supports sustainability efforts within the community.
Certain recyclable items may be dropped off at the City’s Recycling Center. Turn left on North Brookfield Road, just before the railroad crossing.
For a list accepted at the recycling center, see here.
For a list of what to do with non-recyclables, see here.
Bulky Items

The City offers a special collection service for bulky household items. Residents can arrange for the pickup of large items that don’t fit in regular garbage carts by contacting GFL at 262-367-6040. A special truck is usually sent out for such items with a collection time that may be as early as 6:00 am. There is a charge of $45.00 payable to GFL by credit card when ordering the pick up, which must be done least by the day prior to the normal garbage collection day. This service helps ensure proper disposal of items like furniture, appliances, and other large refuse, contributing to the community’s cleanliness and sustainability efforts.
For further information, see the City’s Disposal of Bulky Items notice.
Hazardous Waste

Brookfield has specific guidelines for residents to dispose of hazardous waste safely and responsibly.
For what constitutes hazardous waste, permanent collection sites and special one day collection sites consult the County’s flyer.
The City also advises residents to minimize the use of hazardous products where possible and to explore eco-friendly alternatives. By adhering to these policies, residents contribute to maintaining a clean and safe community, while helping to protect the local ecosystem from hazardous waste contamination.
Document Shredding

Neither the City nor the County provides a document shredding service. Any paper shredded by homeowners should not be put into recycling bins because it tangles in the material sorting machines. Rather, it should be put in your regular trash can.
Residents needing large quantities of documents shredded can take them to:
- The nearest FedEx office where a charge is made of $1.60 per pound.
- Strongbox, 17145 J W Bluemound Rd, Brookfield. Appointment required.
- KARD Shredding, 2925 S 163rd Street ,New Berlin.
No appointment required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only from 9 am to 2 pm.
