A Bit of Sheepshead History in the Area
Sheepshead has deep roots in Milwaukee, thanks to the city’s strong German heritage. The game originated in Central Europe in the eighteenth century and came to Wisconsin with German immigrants who settled heavily in Milwaukee throughout the nineteenth century. By 1880, Germans made up more than a quarter of the city’s population, bringing with them traditions that quickly became part of local culture—including their favorite card games.
Derived from the Bavarian game Schafkopf (“sheep’s head”), Sheepshead became a staple in Milwaukee homes, taverns, beer halls, and social clubs, where neighbors gathered to play, socialize, and keep their cultural ties alive. Over time, it grew so beloved that Milwaukee officially declared Sheepshead the city’s card game in 1983, and it remains widely played across Wisconsin today.
From friendly kitchen‑table games to tournaments at German Fest and statewide leagues, Sheepshead continues to be a cherished Wisconsin pastime—one that still brings people together, just as it does here at Pheasant Run.
